Shane Breheny
CEO, CitiPower/Powercor
CitiPower has succeeded in maintaining
its excellent reputation amongst
customers and regulators in 2007.
The Essential Services Commission
comparative report of October 2007,
recognised its strong performance, along
with Powercor Australia, awarding a
‘green light’ rating across all categories
of performance.
The report confirmed that CitiPower
is performing to the highest available
standards of efficiency and reliability.
In addition, CitiPower had the smallest
proportion of complaints on the Energy
and Water Ombudsman of Victoria
Complaints Index, and has also retained
its joint ranking with Powercor at No.1
on the NEMMCO compliance index.
Electricity Distribution Network
Growing demand for electricity in the
Melbourne CBD has underpinned a
strong financial performance in 2007.
Total distribution revenue was
$206.6 million, excluding pass-through
transmission revenue. Sales volume rose
to 6,079 GWh from 5,975 GWh at the
end of 2006. Of this 1.7% increase,
-0.9% was due to weather conditions
relative to the previous year and 2.6%
was due to an increase in underlying
sales growth.
Beyond a major transmission incident
outside CitiPower’s control in January
2007, reliability has continued to be good
during the year. The business maintained
its status as the most reliable urban
electricity distribution business
in Australia.
Customer numbers across the CitiPower
network continued to increase during the
year, to 299,342 at the end of 2007 from
296,123 the previous year. In turn,
leading to growth in overall consumption.
This growth resulted in higher customer
contributions, along with high capital
spending on customer connections.
Planning for the impending roll-out of the
Advanced Metering Infrastructure system
in the CitiPower network is well underway.
The new system will provide significant
benefits to customers as well as entailing
substantial capital expenditure for CitiPower
and Powercor. This is beneficial as capital
expenditure is added to the Regulated
Asset Base by the regulator and contributes
Unregulated Business Activity
Powercor Network Services is the
network construction and maintenance
business of CitiPower and Powercor.
Unregulated business activity continues
to grow strongly and revenue from this
area has exceeded expectations.
People and Communities
A significant challenge for all companies
in the sector, including CitiPower, is to
identify and meet their skills and
resources needs for the future. CitiPower
has continued to promote a proactive
program of online recruitment, and high
numbers of apprentices, trainees and
graduates were hired throughout the year.
As always, safety comes first at
CitiPower and its standards and programs
remain effective and widely respected.
The Company will continue to invest in
its systems and people to keep its
employees and customers safe, and to
meet the high standards required by
regulatory authorities.
* Other revenue for Powercor and CitiPower is reported jointly for the two companies, and includes revenue generated by the Powercor Network Service devision,
excluded services revenue and customer contributions revenue.
